Need a Commercial Building or Horse Arena? Go with a Pole Barn

These days “pole barn” is basically an architectural or construction term. Pole barn design, however, is invoked for all kinds of low-rise buildings—commercial building to horse arena. Indeed, pole buildings were once reserved for the farm. Its simpler foundation probably made it an easier method during those old barn raisings.

Even before that the pole building concept was alive and well. Pre-historic peoples throughout the world used posts embedded in the ground to fashion sturdy structures for residences and other uses. In low-lying wetlands, poles elevated structures above water hazards. Pioneers used poles to provide shelter for animals and crops. But the limited life-span of tree poles in contact with the ground made them unsuitable for use longer than a few years.

Modernizing Pole Barns

Commercial BuildingH. Howard Doane is credited with being quite an innovator in the post frame industry. In 1930, to cut costs Doane first combined the availability of poles and metal roof sheeting into a “modern” building concept. A couple of significant technological developments in the twentieth century became solutions for the earlier problems.

  • New pressure-treated woods for posts and trusses provided excellent durability that out-shined the strength of a concrete foundation in carrying the roof and building loads
  • Large but lightweight sheets of metal roofing and siding that could stretch between studs and trusses.

Lester Buildings Engineering

Lester Buildings brought the design into the 21st century with engineered building systems. Their team of professional engineers ensures every component is designed for quality, safety, and compatibility. We expect the same from our suppliers.

And then comes the fabulous cost-effective roof and steel panels. Eclipse Metal Roof System is strong and weather tight for new construction or re-Commercial Buildingroofing projects. The ingenious metal roof system combines the structural integrity of a through-fastened roof with the sleek appearance of a standing seam metal roof.

Improvements Bring Pole Barns to Commercial Building

The post-frame building had its origin in agricultural applications. Now its major market leapfrogs over the farms and into many other types of low-rise buildings. Post-frame methods are now exemplified everywhere—commercial, civic, retail, religious and other enterprises. Post-frame construction has proven to be strong, durable, and good looking in schools and churches, fire stations and hangars, as well as strip malls, convenience stores, restaurants, and office complexes.
