Know 5 things Before Buying a New Pole Barn

Before you venture into the process of ordering a new pole barn kit, be sure you know what to expect. You will want to know the cost, quality of materials, if engineers create the pole barn system, the projected lifespan of the building and your property values, and if a local contractor can deliver the best option.

1. COSTS

You’ll first need to know if you could afford building a new pole barn. Cost alone may guide your decisions. Lester Buildings has divided these into five major components: use, size, location, longevity, and aesthetics. Here see variables that effect cost:

  • Building Use. How do you plan to use the building? If you would like an outdoor patio cover or an extra storage shed, you can get by without insulation. However, if you’re looking at a big commercial manufacturing operation, then, understandably, it will need a much more sophisticated pole building system.
  • Size. Overall, the greater the square footage, the greater the cost. But, our designers and architects can vary aspects such as the roof pitch and height to accommodate a second level or other working spaces.
  • Building Location. The reason location plays a role has to do with the site preparation. The contractor will estimate the amount of necessary earthwork, where utilities can be placed, if desired. They will look at the need for drainage fields, tree removal, and many other aspects of your property.
  • Building Longevity. Engineered building systems last longer than traditionally built structures. If you want your building to last, you will choose the quality, durable materials. You will choose the sturdier options for foundations and roof materials.
  • Aesthetics. If you’re looking for exterior accessories such as porches and wainscoting, you will undoubtedly raise the cost. If you want a simple garage or auto shop, you might disregard the extras. But if you are thinking of your dream horse stables, you might go all out with everything from the Dutch doors to cupolas.

2. QUALITY OF MATERIALS

Is any candidate for building contractor going to use highest quality materials? For example, at Lester Buildings, each material has been scrutinized, graded, manufactured, and presented to achieve excellence. Roof panels, lumber, purlins, windows, doors—everything down to the screws and bolts.

3. ENGINEERED SYSTEM

Be sure a team of professional engineers ensure every building component fulfills the desired function. Designers need to seek quality, safety, and compatibility. Any suppliers also should hold a high standard. In the end, all of these components and materials must be engineered to support each other.

4. PROPERTY VALUES and LIFESPAN

An extra functional building will undoubtedly increase your property values. But you will also encourage the future flexibility of a building by adding on to your basic plan. Add square feet and taller doors, for example. This creates the flexibility that a buyer might need.

To increase the lifespan of any pole barn, find a builder with solid workmanship. Be sure a structural engineer takes part. Ask about a Lifetime Structural Design warranty, a workmanship warranty, and warranties on the components.

5. Local Colorado Contractors

Do your homework until you conclude that a specific builder can be trusted. Observe how the sales rep listens to your needs or doesn’t. Will the builder allow you to customize a floor plan design? Will the builder allow you the time and space to ponder alternatives? And can you add your own creative flair to the project?

Take your time and ask questions. Construction speak (terms and practices) could challenge your comfortability. Find out how long they have been in the business and get references.
