Home Farm and Prepper Possibilities

Engineering, design, and materials available today allows Sapphire Construction to custom design for each client. In these uncertain times, people want flexibility. Some want to grow, process, or store extra food, reminiscent of times when root cellars were common.

So, let’s go over a few ways pole buildings for ag storage and/or shop activities for small properties. Let’s say you raise a few fruit trees, garden, maybe plant a few acres of grain. Depending on the variety, apples will stay fresh for several months. That is if the food storage unit can keep them at forty degrees Fahrenheit with ninety percent relative humidity.

Potatoes keep for quite a while at fifty degrees with 50 to 70 percent relative humidity. Squash will also last for up to six months and onions like it cold and dark. None of these foods can survive freezing temperatures that could find longevity in a root cellar. Regardless, the floorplan inside your buildings can be adapted to your needs.

Agricultural Shops

Other options include cooking produce to can or freeze it or drying vegetables to store in five-gallon containers. These processes can take place in a properly equipped multi-purpose shop. Farm shops easily accommodate farm and gardening equipment and the various activities involved in farming.

Grain storage requires other unique storage environments. Whether using bulk grain bags or grain bins, the grain needs to be aerated regularly and examined for insects and rodents. It can be stored on a slightly sloped, firm but elevated surface with sufficient drainage and moisture control. These types of activities can also happen in an adjoining porch or silo.
