Steel Buildings for Indoor Riding Arenas

In the good ol’ USA, we refer to the large equestrian buildings as “indoor riding arenas.” The French call them indoor riding halls or “manege.” Either way, large, covered indoor riding arenas and indoor riding halls, enable horses and riders to train or compete in a protected environment.

Colorado Indoor Riding Arenas

In Colorado we need arenas to train all year round. Equestrians here look for indoor arenas because of our climate and weather patterns. Although You can get by with a lightweight tension fabric building if you are in a mild climate, it is not so easy along the Front Range of Colorado Rockies. We need strong steel buildings. We engineer sustainable equestrian arenas that indoor heavy wind, bucket loads of snow, and drenching rains.

While in the olden days, a few dozen men might raise a wood barn, we need steel. In Douglas County, Colorado, Sapphire Construction in partnership with Lester Buildings constructs engineered pole buildings to far outlast arenas constructed decades ago. We use post frame construction.

Designing Equestrian Facilities

So how do we design an indoor riding arena? The tastes and purposes of every building owner of each equestrian facility drive the process. Commonly, owners want facilities in the 10,000 to 50,000 square foot range. Private arenas often include a couple of stables on one end. Commercial riding arenas may feature several rows of stalls and stables under a large roof or in a second building attached to the large arena.

Owners choose features needed for their purposes. There will be areas to store feed and equipment, tack rooms, and wash bays. Often bigger equestrian facilities have restrooms and concession areas, loading zones, viewing rooms or seating, and judge stands, etc.
Important System Features

In addition to comfort and aesthetics, we install important systems in horse riding arenas. For example, most arenas have a type of sand or soil on the flooring. To keep the ground in the right shape, we install special irrigation systems. Watering minimizing dust clouds. The lighting is important, also.

During the design phase, we also talk about natural and artificial lighting. Designers discuss roof types and shape, skylights, and windows to allow for natural lighting. They talk about adjustable artificial lights. And air quality is extremely important. Owners may decide to add systems for healthy air circulation such as passive fresh air systems and other heating and cooling systems.

Style and Colors

Yes, you can order a red barn with white trim. But you can also choose any color scheme and style imaginable for your indoor riding arena. We offer excellent paint systems and warranties.
