The organizing of the tack during the design process is all important.  Deciding exactly what needs to be stored is one of the first steps to designing the perfect tack room.  What are the goals for the horses and what equipment will be needed along the way?

Write down everything that needs to be stored in each tack room in addition to all activities.  This gives exact purpose to the room and will define space needed.  If necessary, use an Excel sheet to list everything required for the care and upkeep of horses lodged in the barn.  Remember to include equipment needed for future events and performances.

Note:  Tack rooms should not be used to store feed as it will give off dust and could damage leathers. Likewise mold can be problematic. It can be regulated using air filtration systems such as dehumidifiers, air conditioners, or heaters.

Tack rooms need wall space and enough floor space to maneuver around with saddles in tow. A few things to consider:

  1. Saddles are large. They can be individually perched on small cabinets which provide extra storage underneath. They can be lined up on a wall-to-wall board. They can be hung on saddle hooks.
  2. Bridles, bits, and lead ropes need to be hung in an orderly way. It can be as simple as installing a pegboard but there are many types of hooks that work well.
  3. Blankets and saddle pads need to be cleaned periodically. Think about shelves, racks, or bins to hold cloth items.
  4. Be sure to plan for good lighting and air circulation or even air conditioning.
  5. Counters, cabinets, a refrigerator, a sink, benches and chairs are very helpful add-ons.

Best Locations for Tack Rooms

Tack rooms need to be convenient, else the caretakers will be wasting time walking from room to room. Good locations may be close to the wash stall and/or grooming area. If the horse travels frequently, think about possibilities near the loading bay.
Smaller barns used for a couple of horses may only require one tack room but larger equestrian facilities need to have additional tack rooms. In addition, some simple tack can be kept in a small cabinet near each horse.  Horse barns in Colorado used as boarding facilities may need separate tack rooms or locked areas for use by boarders.

Decor

Many tack rooms feature beautiful interiors décor.  The sky is the limit there.  Attractive tile, paneling, woodwork, displays and artwork are up to each individual’s tastes and budget. Many equestrian centers have allowed for oversized tack rooms that include seating and gathering places to encourage socializing.
